In my last blog, I discussed free radicals and free radical damage and, when the skin is exposed to the environment, our bodies create free radicals. The free radicals attack our healthy cells and damage the cell DNA.

The free radical damage cause all sorts of illnesses such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, skin disorders and skin diseases.

ARE FREE RADICALS ALL BAD?

NO!!!
Our bodies actually produce free radicals and in some cases NEED free radicals.

  • Free radicals are needed to create melanin (skin pigment).
Free radicals are produced when metabolising food.
  • The immune system actually creates free radicals in our body purposely to neutralise infection/disease.

SO they are not all bad. It’s just getting the right amount for our body.

For example, having a glass of red wine at night has health benefits but too many can have less desirable consequences!!!

HOW MANY FREE RADICALS ARE HEALTHY?

Our body does produce anti-oxidants which are substances that NEUTRALISE free radicals. What they do is either prevent damage or delay the damage.

Whilst we are young, fit and healthy all the delaying and prevention of free radical damage is fantastic. However as we age, we produce fewer antioxidants and when we don’t have enough antioxidants to fight free radicals disease occurs.

So how can we increase the level of antioxidants in our body?

  • FOOD
  • SUPPLEMENTS
  • SKIN CARE PRODUCTS CONTAINING VITAMINS AND PEPTIDES
